Brought in by IOR, Chris started a new era at Pools, a one that would take us on a great journey. Heralded for bringing a new level of professionalism to the club, he also made some excellent signings. The call to try and revive Sheff Wed was just too big but he left us a runaway leaders, on course for our first title.....
Even on returning to the club he has always been highly regarded by Pools fans and he still talks fondly about the club and our supporters.
Here is what she had to say....
What where your first impression when you first went to Hartlepool?
I loved the north east from my Sunderland days and my first impression of Hartlepool was tough crowd but passionate.
Best player you signed for Pools?
Value for money it could have been 5 or 6 players but I will go with Chris Westwood.
And the worst?
As for the worst like any manager there were players that disappointed so it’s unfair to name.
Leaving the club some 12 points clear at the top of league two playing some great football.
Proudest moment keeping the club in the football league.
Would you have done anything differently?
No I wouldn’t have done anything different because you make decisions at the time because you believe them to be correct.
Are you still in contact with anyone from back?
I speak to a number of players from time to time. I always look out for the score every game they play, great club with great passionate fans.
I stand by my record at the club from the day I started to the day I left Some people forget I left the club in league one after just beating Sheffield United 2-0 in the league cup.
Add anything you want to Chris?
I wish Matthew Bates every success, he needs everyone behind him in good times and difficult times. I wish well the new owners. They have taken over at a very difficult time for obvious reasons but I thank them for taking it all on. I hope to visit the club this season and see some old faces.
